We need a Rudy Giuliani to clean up our streets

I recall being a young traveller in New York City during the 1980s. I was full of adventure, yet riddled with fear as I walked her violent streets. Muggings, bashings, alcohol-drug fuelled assaults and murder were the norm. Ring any bells?

The streets remained so until a man with an unswayable sense of humanity and staunch political fibre stepped forward and said "enough is enough". Mayor Rudy Giuliani's entire community stood alongside him: mums and dads, concerned citizens, hospital surgeons, courts, police and even newspaper editors. Together they reclaimed their city, returning safety to all who ventured there.

Perhaps the real question for us, then, should be: is there a Rudy Giuliani in any of our big-city phone books? If there is, someone ring him now because he's running horribly late.
