Rudy Giuliani sounded like a candidate at the MRC Dinner
Former GOP Mayor Rudolph Giuliani last night blasted Democratic President Barack Obama's decision to try five accused 9/11 terrorists in New York federal court.
Speaking to a packed crowd of more than 1,100 at a Molinari Republican Club (MRC) dinner at the Hilton Garden Inn, Bloomfield, Giuliani said that Obama "does not believe we have a war going on."
"That's all well and good," Giuliani said, "but the terrorists think there's a war against us."
Giuliani said there was no reason for Obama to bring the detainees, including alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, here when they could be tried in military tribunals.
He said tribunals would make guilty verdicts more certain; would expose fewer national security secrets, and would diminish the likelihood of New York becoming more of a terrorist target during the trials.
"If it was necessary, I'd be the first one to say that we should do it, that we could handle it," Giuliani said.
Giuliani also lambasted Obama for dithering over whether to send more troops to Afghanistan.
"The war's been going on since he's been president," Giuliani said. "Why the delay?"
He also slammed Obama for refusing to say that the Fort Hood shootings, allegedly carried out by Major Nidal M. Hasan, were an "Islamic terrorist attack."
"It doesn't take a genius to figure that out when [Hasan's] yelling 'allahu akbar' when he's about to kill people," Giuliani said.
In addition to firing up Staten Island Republicans, Giuliani said that he hoped last night's dinner would be part of a nationwide GOP effort next year to take back Senate, House and gubernatorial seats.
But he declined to say whether he would run for governor, telling reporters that he would save an announcement "for a little later."
