Marist Poll: NYers Prefer Spitzer To Paterson
Talk about adding insult to injury.
Today's Marist poll (which has a snappy new Web page) brings more bad news for Gov. David Paterson, finding a majority of New Yorkers - including 50 percent of Democrats - would prefer to see disgraced former Gov. Eliot Spitzer in office right now than his hand-picked LG who ascended to power in the wake of his prostitution scandal.
Only 19 percent of voters polled said they approve of the job Paterson is doing - a seven-percentage point drop since last month - and just 22 percent of the governor's fellow Democrats think he's performing well in office.
Paterson can take small comfort in the fact that 66 percent of New Yorkers think he's working hard, but that's down from 77 percent in March.
He is winning approval for his handling of the swine flu outbreak, with 46 percent giving his management on this issue high marks, compared to 18 percent who disapprove and 36 percent who were unsure.
Meanwhile, AG Andrew Cuomo is the top-rated elected official in the state, with 70 percent of the electorate saying he's doing either a "good" or "excellent" job.
Cuomo has also widened his lead over Paterson in a hypothetical 2010 head-to-head match-up, with a whopping 70 percent of Democrats saying they would vote for the AG over the current governor.
