Giuliani Backers' 'New Cause'

A statewide group that has been trying to "Draft Rudy" into the 2010 governor's race since at least this past spring has ramped up its efforts by sending e-mails seeking support for the former mayor from his presidential campaign donors.

A reader forwarded one of those e-mails received by a Democratic friend who first wondered how it was the Giuliani camp has received his contact information, only to recall that he had contributed to Giuliani's failed 2008 bid - the only GOP candidate to whom he had ever given campaign cash.

The e-mail reads as follows:

Dear XXXX,

In the past you have been one of those courageous Americans supporting Rudy Giuliani for President of the United States and calling for the real change that his proven record of successful leadership and reform would bring to our nation.

There is now a new cause!

The Great State of New York is in crisis. Gov. Paterson and his Democrat allies in the legislature have imposed additional burdensome tax and fee increase on residents of our great state totaling more than $8-billion, our deficit has ballooned to an additional $2.1-billion in the last 3 months, raising our 4-year projected deficit to $38.2-billion.

Unemployment in the state is soaring, at 8.6% (9.6% in New York City, the highest rate since 1997), and after the recent political chaos in Albany, the people of New York are dissatisfied and calling for real reform.

Rudy is the man to fix these problems and bring the real reform New York needs.

Please join our movement by registering at http://www.draftrudy.com and sign our online petition to draft Rudy Giuliani for Governor of New York in 2010.

Thank you very much and we look forward to seeing you at DraftRudy.com

Best Regards,

Your Friends At DraftRudy.com

This isn't the first Draft Rudy e-mail.

One went out in June at the height of the Senate stalemate that highlighted the former mayor's Times OpEd calling for a constitutional convention.

Giuliani has been keeping his own counsel on his 2010 intentions, although his recent involvement in the state GOP chairmanship fight has increased speculation that he is leaning toward running.

The former mayor has said he won't make any announcements about his plans until after the November elections out of respect for Mayor Bloomberg, whose thunder he doesn't want to steal while he seeks a third term.
