Committee of New Yorkers to Draft Rudy Giuliani for Governor Release:

DRAFT RUDY FOR GOVERNOR

Bartle Bull, Anthony Coles, Mrs. Thomas E. Dewey, Jr. and Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jr., co-chairs, announce the formation of the committee of New Yorkers to Draft Rudy Giuliani for Governor. In launching this statewide citizens committee, the group’s executive director, Bartle Bull, issued the following statement:

“In 1993 New York City needed a leader of Rudy Giuliani’s ability, integrity and effectiveness to turn around the greatest city in America. In 2009, New York State needs Rudy Giuliani to turn around the crisis in government in the Empire State.

“Rudy’s record of hard accomplishment, his combination of policy and performance, are as essential across our state today as they were in New York City when he cut taxes 23 times, balanced the budget 7 times, reduced crime by 57 per cent, cut unemployment in half, took 640,000 people off the welfare rolls and added over 420,000 new private sector jobs. No wonder that in 1997 he was re-elected as mayor with nearly 60 per cent of the vote in a city in which Democrats outnumber Republicans five to one. Better government services, more jobs and lower taxes are as important today in Rochester and Utica as they were then in Queens and the Bronx.

“Rudy Giuliani transformed the city despite an overwhelmingly Democratic City Council. The Albany legislature is far more evenly balanced. Our state is fortunate to have him available today. The job of our bipartisan citizens committee is to draft him in this critical campaign and to build support for Rudy Giuliani’s candidacy as governor of New York State.”

A writer and retired lawyer, Bartle Bull served as Robert Kennedy’s New York State campaign manager in 1968, as New York State Campaign Coordinator for Jimmy Carter in 1976, as Executive Director of New York Citizens for Edward Kennedy for President in 1980, as Executive Director of Citizens for Mario Cuomo for Governor in 1982, as Chairman of New Yorkers for Giuliani for Senate in 2000, and as Chairman of New York Democrats for McCain in 2008. He is announcing this initiative without any consultation with Mr. Giuliani.

Anthony Coles, a partner at the law firm of DLA Piper in New York City, served as Deputy Mayor when Rudy Giuliani was mayor of New York.
